Are you planning a wedding? Are you worried about settling for a wedding you did not envision? Rest assured that a beautiful wedding is possible during a recession! Even though we are in uncertain economic times with the price of food doubling (I paid $10 for a pack of 3 chicken breasts the other day!) , car companies getting financial bailouts, and some retailers closing, there are ways to save money and have the wedding you dream of.
Some ways to save money include:
- Choose a day other than a Saturday to get married. If your heart is set on getting married on a Saturday consider holding your reception earlier in the day
- Have a morning or afternoon reception instead of a dinner reception to help save on catering and food costs
- Choose an off-peak month from November through April for some great savings
- Ensure a smaller guest list by inviting close friends and family. A smaller guest list equates to a smaller food and beverage bill.
- Decide what aspects of your wedding are most important to you and your fiance’. If a moist and delicious cake is more important than flowers put more money towards your cake.
For great financial tips everyone should consider when planning a wedding check out DIY Bride’s article on How To Recession-Proof Your Wedding.

How much should I spend on a wedding gift for the bride and groom? Do I have to purchase an extravagant gift or would a smaller gift be acceptable? Peggy Post, a leading etiquette expert, suggests basing the amount you spend on a wedding gift on your budget as well as the affection you have for the bride and groom. If you are close to the bride or groom you might consider spending more than you would spend on a gift for an acquaintance. Additionally, it is perfectly acceptable to split the cost of a high-ticket item with another guest(s). Cash or a check is also an acceptable gift. Ultimately when selecting a wedding gift keep in mind that you should spend whatever you feel comfortable with.
How do you determine the amount you will spend on a wedding gift?

Lara of Lara Swanson Photo wrote a great article on budgeting for your wedding.
Additionally, couples may be surprised at how reasonable it is to hire a Professional Wedding Planner. Some couples may not budget for a Wedding Planner or think that they can not afford a Wedding Planner. Wedding Planners can save a couple time through the planner’s knowledge of reputable vendors. Also a professional Wedding Planner will find the most cost effective vendor based upon the couple’s particular needs all the while ensuring that the couple is getting the best value for their dollar. A Wedding Planner can also potentially save the couple money in the long run due to the professional working relationships the planner and vendors have established or through utilizing the planner’s negotiating skills.
